Dorktown Jamboree
Jun. 15th, 2008 08:43 amI had a big day yesterday. Austin and I went to a radio remote his brother was doing at a music store I'd never heard of near the mall. They were having a drawing for a drum set and a bass or guitar, and Austin couldn't enter because Nate works for the station. I didn't win (and I also found out later that I couldn't have won anyway, boo!), but we went in the store anyway and ended up buying a beginning bass book (complete with cheesy illustrations of 80s children) and clarinet reeds. I got the book because I've been interested in learning bass for years but never really got around to it. The reeds are, well, for the clarinet? In case I never mentioned this, I used to be pretty good at clarinet back in high school and probably should pick it back up. I mean, yeah, the clarinet is pretty dorky and won't get you any dates, but I'd be mad at myself if I lost the ability to play. It was a big part of my life for years, really.
After that, we picked up Austin's clarinet (he also played back in the day) and a bass guitar he's letting me borrow. (I figured I would see if I'm still interested in learning once I get over the initial "I have all the stuff!" phase before I get a bass for myself. I'd hate to buy one and then discover that I hate the damn thing and want to break it in two every time I look at it.) We then cruised over to my place and tried to play clarinet. Austin got a little discouraged. He said it was because he "had lost it," but I think he just needs to get his pads replaced. I had some trouble hitting a few of the notes on his instrument that seemed fine on mine. I don't know.
Austin tried to get me to play bass, but I was too intimidated. I've heard him play bass before because he's been playing that for years, and I felt kind of silly. I know that's ridiculous because we all have to start somewhere, but hmm... I sat looking at the book while Austin chimed in with pointers and comments about the book and stuff I'd be learning later instead. He said of the whole thing, "This will probably just make you want to play clarinet more and me want to play bass more." Augh.
So, I'm nearly always having sushi cravings (probably because I'm yuppie-ish, but you'll never hear me admit it!). I don't like going at dinnertime because All-You-Can-Eat is so expensive. However, I really wanted some yesterday, so we invited Siobhan and Michael to come with us. During the process of getting ready to go, Mike also suggested we go bowling. He and Austin had a bet going about who would pay for beer by the time I got back, so it was settled.
We went and stuffed ourselves with fish at Sushi Boat (so full, but it was worth it) and headed over to the Grand Sierra for bowling. I admit, I hate bowling. It hurts my hands, and I've never gotten the hang of throwing the ball right. I was whiny and not very sportsmanlike about it, but it was pretty fun to hang out with my siblings and Austin somewhere outside the house.
Then, after a rousing round of Rock Band, it was time for bed. That's where I'd still be if Olive in her infinite wisdom hadn't woken me up with her incessant meowing and attempted cat burgling. (Sigh. I guess I had to wake up sometime anyway.) Lots of things going on, though. Hopefully there's more to come.
Anyway, that's enough of my babbling. Hope you and yours all have a happy father's day!
