Riding in the car with Austin and his dad earlier--

Austin said, "Do you mind if I change it to top 40 hits?"

Austin's dad agreed. A few minutes later, he said, "Wait, this isn't right. I thought you meant hits of the 40s."

HA!

EDIT: Also forgot this little tid-bit--

Little Austin asked if Austin's mustache was real. I said it was, and he rubbed his fingers over it.

He said, "It doesn't feel real. Can I feel the other side?" He felt it. "No, still doesn't feel real."

Double ha.

What's really sad is that when I first read this, I thought the same thing as Austin's dad. My eye completely skipped over the "top" part, and I thought how nice it was that Austin wanted to listen to something his dad liked. LOL

Haha! Our brains tend to fill in what we read to make meaning, I hear. There was a sheet going around a few years back that had a sentence with only the first and last letters of each word correct. The remaining letters were mixed up between, and people were still able to read the sentence about the study. If that makes any sense at all...

I've seen that. It's definitely works that way. They say you only catch about 75% of mistakes when you're proofing something. And I work as an editor!

See, I probably wouldn't have caught it if you had not pointed it out. How do you tend to edit things? I hear reading backwards helps, but I've always wondered how professionals do it.

It depends on the goal. Sometimes I'm editing something where I can make major changes if needed to keep to a certain style. Sometimes I'm supposed to keep the text as close to the original as possible and just clean it up and make sure it makes sense. It determines how fast I go or how nitpicky I get. It sure makes one appreciate people who proofread. ;)
