Reorganization Projects

I've been in the process of reorganizing since before Mike's parents came last month. The last major part of the puzzle was our kitchen. The problem with our kitchen is we have a tiny pantry to store all our food, and it has been jam-packed with stuff since Mike got here. Because of this, we've had a lot of our food supply sitting on the counters, which gives us much less space to cook (or for Mike to cook, really, since I hardly get to it). I had wanted to have this problem solved before Mike's parents arrived, but it was not to be. Between new furniture being delivered, setting up shelves in the office and cleaning out the garage, I was a bit tapped out by the time they got here. It made us look a little sloppy, but I ran out of time.
I had put this issue on the back-burner since then, but the problem came to a head a few days ago when Mike was making a salmon stir-fry and couldn't find sesame oil. Both of us looked everywhere for it in both the cabinets and the piles of food on the counter and couldn't find it. He used something else, but it was still irritating.
This weekend I hadn't even really planned on it, but I tackled the kitchen anyway. I tend to give myself one project per weekend, and since I used to alternate between cleaning bathrooms and the kitchen when I was single, I realized I couldn't really clean the kitchen if I was going to go back to that schedule. It was way too much to move everything, clean under it, and move it back.
So I had Mike help me move the cans to the garage, which my mother had suggested. Once that shelf was empty, I felt obligated to sort through the rest of the pantry and ended up finding that most of our food was out of date. How the heck did that happen? I don't know. We're dumb like that, I guess. Once I went through the whole thing, I figured out that I could put all our remaining food back in the pantry, with not only room for all of it but room to see everything that was on each shelf. I'm hoping this will help us to see what's in there as well as to avoid having this situation happen again (at least on that kind of scale).
So that was cool. There's a lot more counter space now, and today I got a bin to put all the baking stuff in so it doesn't get lost in the cabinet. Mike also got a small plastic chest of drawers to house most of his spices, so hopefully that will help relieve some of the frustration we've both had over the spice cabinet, which has been out of control for some time.
Long story short, I think we're just about there with organization at the moment, which works out since session is rapidly approaching and I won't be able to fix much of anything in the coming months. The one sad part of today is Mike spent a good chunk of the evening wrestling with some low carb pizza dough, finally getting it to where he wanted, and when he went to pull the finished pizza out of the oven, it flipped over and landed toppings down on the oven door. Boo. Poor guy. Oh well. We got Round Table instead, so it wasn't a total loss.
I ought to go to bed soon, I suppose. Work tomorrow. I don't wanna.
