First, Austin sent me this interesting article on Obama and potential election pitfalls due to race: Obama: The Price of Being Black

Secondly, I'm fairly tired. I went to a Freezepop show last night with Austin. Everything I read said it was at eight, but eleven rolled around before even the opening band started playing. It was annoying, but we took walks and had a few drinks to pass the time. When Freezepop finally started playing, it was worth it. Pouring out of the bar at 1:00 in the morning drenched in sweat and cigarette smoke wasn't all that fun, though. Maybe I just don't get what's so great about bars after all.

Neither was taking Austin to get his car fixed again at 9:00 this morning after going to bed at 3:00, but you do what you got to do. (At least it seems to be running now after having issues with stalling and the check engine light randomly lighting up. Here's hoping after he spent $600 on it yesterday.)

Eh, don't mind me. I'm supposed to be reading for legal research, but I'm just a little tired. (I only have 8 pages left of 80, though.) It doesn't help that my mom's also in town for the weekend and made a turkey breast for dinner. I knew I shouldn't have played Sims all day yesterday on top of that. (NO, it was awesome and fun.) Now it's Sunday, and Spore is out. I don't have time for it between reading and needing to study for the library aide test on Thursday, but I want it. Sigh.

Anyway, I should probably stop rambling and get back to studying of some sort. Enough of this nonsense.

EDIT: OH, I forgot to mention Austin's dad is returning home tomorrow. It's almost a shock at this point since he's been in the hospital or in physical rehab since February. Hope things go well.

In a world without the best movie announcer ever...

SAD! Don LaFontaine was totally the man.

Other than that, I don't have much to report. I hung out with Aurora on Sunday. We had some insightful conversations I'm still mulling over. Perhaps it was the beer? Those topics might show up here later on. I ended up skipping out at 9:00 pm because I wanted to play my game like the dork I am. Surprisingly, that hasn't happened much since I got it due to socializing and such.

Yesterday evening, I hung out with Austin and some of his moped buddies again. It's been a while, but it was fabulous. I don't know where Mary-Liz gets the energy to grow a garden in her backyard as well as make tons of delicious food that she said she would have ended up throwing out anyway if we didn't come to eat it, but man! I'm totally envious!

And now I really should get on the homework I only attempted to do in a half-assed manner this weekend. Either that or take a walk. Maybe both. Hope you all had a good weekend/labour day.

I made it three days eating closely vegetarian. (I had some bacon ranch Pringles, but I don't think those count.) It wasn't too bad, but since Austin cheated yesterday (his brother randomly brought him a chili dog), I had some pepperoni pizza for lunch. Eh... The goal isn't to go completely vegetarian, I guess, but I do want to start being more aware of what I'm eating as well as eating healthier. I've been really bad about that lately. (I'm sure the chocolate chip cookies I baked this afternoon don't help, but they are vegetarian. Haha.) Mostly vegetarian, I suppose. I ate salad and toast for dinner!

I've been watching the Olympics a lot, probably because it's on. I've never been really all that interested in it before, but I find myself rooting for random countries. It must be the power of the announcers' suggestions, but I watch these athletes from Ethiopia and Australia and Kenya and even China and really want them to win. There are a whole slew of events I never really knew or cared about, like marathon running, beach volleyball, water polo and cycling to name just a few. It's amazing. Austin was talking about how we haven't been really hearing about many of the events other than swimming in our media, like all the other events have dropped out of the Olympics just because the U.S. happens to have Michael Phelps and Dara Torres this year. Oh, nationalism. You're so strange.

Siobhan came home yesterday but has gone to Smith for a few days to visit. I'm trying to shift things around and make the house for three again, but I haven't been all that successful. It's been a while. Austin called and asked if I wanted to go hang out with his friends, but I find myself drained. I don't really know why. What could I do that's draining? I guess I did go shopping and to a craft fair with my mom and decided that I should start trying to make my own clothes again. School's starting again in a week, and I don't have my books yet. I haven't seen Aurora in a while. None of that's bad, though. Just signs of life.

I'm kind of ridiculous. I've got to get myself together. I'm still waiting on a few things, though. And I should stop watching crappy television maybe. Nah, who wants to do that, especially when it looks like Margaret Cho has a new show coming on VH1? That's right!

Anyway, that's probably quite enough of that.

-Went to the Atlantis for sushi with Austin this afternoon. Tasty!
-Have been semi-vegetarian the past few days to support Austin's new diet. Don't know how long I'll last.
-My mom's in town because...
-Siobhan returns tomorrow afternoon.
-School starts on the 25th.
-I have no idea where my first class is and need to figure that out.
-Haven't felt like writing much, so sorry (or you're welcome, depending).
-I'm tired but waiting for it to get a little later or else I'll wake up in the middle of the night.

So, yeah.

EDIT: OH! And 8-minute abs/buns is 80s-tastic but really hard, just in case you wanted to know. Good night.

I'm a little impressed with myself. It's 5:40-something, and I've already nearly completed tonight's special birthday dinner for Austin. Actually, I was almost finished an hour ago, and the kitchen is clean. (Fun fact: I love it when it looks like I don't cook in my kitchen but still have a beautiful dinner. It doesn't happen often.) How is this possible?

I made the special dish (cheese and spinach manicotti) ahead of time after I exercised earlier. Even though it is a time and labor intensive dish, my mom said she used to make pans of it early in the day without tomato sauce on it. Then she'd put it in the refrigerator until she was ready to make the rest of dinner. Awesome!

She also told me the recipe used to be something my aunt Linda (not capitalized on purpose, long story) made all the time from a recipe she found in a magazine; only instead of ricotta cheese (the standard for my mom, sisters, and me), she used cottage cheese. And here I thought my mom had just made it up somewhere.

Since Linda's time, my mom has tweaked the recipe, and my sisters and I have tweaked my mom's recipe. This will probably continue this way forever. The base filling mix is ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and mayonnaise. After this, you can add ground meat or sausage, spinach, extra cheese, herbs and spices, or anything else you think might taste good. It's all going to get stuffed into pasta tubes, slathered in sauce, and baked anyway, so the sky is the limit. I don't think I've made it the same way twice since there is no written recipe at this point. Kind of interesting.

So, this is me babbling and pretending to be Suzy Homemaker while I wait until 7:00 so the food will be nice and hot when Austin gets off work. But I want it now! This is what I get for making something I wanted to eat because Austin had no special requests. Feel free to point and laugh, but sometimes planning really pays off.

Qwantz discusses 'In Medias Res'

I <3 Dinosaur Comics.

So, I'm waiting for the guy putting up gutters on the house to arrive. He was supposed to be here at 11:00. Hmm. Maybe that changed and no one told me?

Austin called to say he loves me. He's currently at a moped rally in Seattle with his buddies. I guess he's been having an alternating good and sucky time with that because he wasn't able to take his moped with him and the loaner, which was running when he got it, is totally broken now. Awesome. He contrasted this by saying all the Seattle kids drink Sparx and other strange soda/alcohol drinks, and he had one that tasted like generic grape soda with 10% alcohol in it. He loves grape soda, by the way.

Ok, I'll stop babbling about Austin now. He won't be back until the eleventh, so I've been kind of really bored. Ahh, gotta find something to do, other than make weird pasta salad out of pasta, peas, cheese cubes, mayo, mustard, too much garlic, pepper, salt, and parsley. (It was way too spicy, guys!) Oh, and play Sims and KOL late into the night after job hunting and exercise and livejournal. Yes, I know. I lead an exciting life.

-Ate lunch at Olive Garden
-Had cake with my parents and brother
-Ate dinner at Sushi Club with Austin

That was just the food yesterday. Dear bog, why don't I weigh a million pounds?

So my parents came into town bearing gifts. My brother was hungover I suspect, but it happens to the best of us. We ate delicious lunch I couldn't finish; then after Olive Garden staff sang to me (they were kind of weirded out that I didn't order dessert), we came home and I opened presents and ate a tiny carrot cake from Entenmann's. I also got phone calls from my sisters, who I hadn't heard from in another long while (have to remedy that), and my aunties and grandparents as well as text messages. Very nice to hear from them all.

Austin managed to get out of work early. He told me not to make any plans for the evening, so after my parents left, he gave me several places to choose from to go to dinner. (Good thinking considering I have a terrible time trying to decide where to eat and usually just go along with whatever everyone else wants.) After a sweet dinner at Sushi club complete with warm Saki, we went to see Step Brothers, which looked stupid to me but there wasn't anything playing that I wanted to see. It turned out pretty entertaining if you left your brain at home.

List of loot and thanks )

That's not really to revel in all the things I received, I swear. I make lists like this every year to make sure I remember where I got things and all I have to be thankful for, which is a lot. I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and kindness even though I'm still at a stalled point in my life. Hopefully, this is only temporary, though.

I had a lot of fun, and now it's time to work on real life again. Have already attempted to balance my checkbook this morning as well as gotten cat food and my pills, so that's a start. Now I'm just hoping my transcripts arrive in the mail, but more on that later. Well on my way to becoming more responsible and adult-like (whatever that means), which is my new year's resolution.

Thanks, everyone! 25 and still alive.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I had a fabulous time hanging out with Aurora the day before as well. We went to Hacienda, played Rock Band, then shot the shit. Nice. ;)

My cats are being ridiculous. I think it's due to the painters painting the front door and such. I was at Austin's when the painters started this morning, and when my mom called to tell me I needed to move my car because they were painting the garage, she was rather surprised I wasn't home.

Um, sorry? I've been here the rest of the time they've been here, but last night, Austin and I decided to have Godfather's pizza and a power hour with random beer from the Sunny Discount Liquor Store down the street from where he lives. After four slices of Hawaiian pizza and a warm-up beer, the power hour didn't go so well. I think we stopped about half-way through because I felt like I was going to explode.

I'm kind of sad I had to rush home to move my car. That means I missed out on pizza for breakfast. Oh well. It's not like I had to work or something (though things are looking up in that department), so it's fine.

Anyway, I was surprised that both cats were still inside when I got home. I guess they were scared? Once here, Kiki figured out the front door was open and escaped, out to kill lizards and birds and throw up the remains on the carpet later no doubt. So looking forward to that. And Olive is freaking out, meowing loudly, taking swipes at me, and chasing one of her mice I found under the couch again.

Ah, what can you do?

Austin fixed my computer last night, but we had to go out and spend $100 on a new power supply to do it, which sucked. Right now, we're trying to see if it'll keep working or what. If it blows up again, I'll have to send the whole thing back.

I guess we could have just sent it back in the first place, but I was depressed that I'd had it working for less than twenty-four hours and Austin wanted to see if he could fix it.

All that smooth installation with no problems the day before? I should have known it was too good to be true. Please don't blow up again, computer. Ah, suckfest.

Finished the legwarmers yesterday! Can you believe it? 11,780 stitches in less than a week! I'm a little proud of that. I still need to find the rest of my outfit, though. Hmm...

We have the alcohol for the featured drink: Flaming Blue Lamborghinis. Austin found it online, and we tried it out a few nights ago. It's, uh, interesting? I think it needs some more work. The blue flame was pretty cool, though. We also need to get more beer for beer pong and probably some mixers yet.

Aurora called and is making a layered bean dip, chili dip, and Chex Mix. Cupcakes and brownies and other delights might make their way in as well. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

A lot of my friends have said they're coming, including people I haven't seen in years as well as people who've never been to our house before. It's kind of crazy! Who doesn't love a theme party with great company as well as free alcohol and food, though? OK, it's just the food and alcohol.

Still having some issues, but I can't do anything about them right now. So party planning it is, or something.

Wall-E

howeverbrief: (Black)
I forgot to mention I watched Wall-E with Austin a few nights ago. It's a cute little movie. Here's a review with a comic bonus.

Potential spoilers? I don't know. )

So often Austin and I come out of movies discussing plot holes. This one had a lot of them, and we discussed bone mass and survival and other things that realistically rip the movie apart. About ten minutes into this conversation, Austin said, "Let's stop criticizing it and say it was cute."

It was visually stunning to be sure, and the rickety little trash unit Wall-E with his love for the more advanced technology of Eve was sweet. The overarching moral was "Take care of the earth, kids!" I guess that's better than some others, even if it was a little heavy handed.

All in all? Worth seeing, especially if you like silly little robots and futuristic stories.

EDIT: We also saw a preview for Beverly Hills Chihuahua that included singing chihuahuas. SINGING CHIHUAHUAS! I wished for sweet death several times during it, but it never came. Sometimes, I'm glad I'm not planning on having children.

Happy 4th!

I had a great time last night. My mom came up and barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs and asparagus as well as had chips and dips and corn on the cob and raw veggies around. Then Aurora and Hunter came by and brought delicious potato salad and a lemon flavored cheesecake with a roasted hazelnut crust. (You're getting so fancy on me!) It was all really tasty, though now my fridge is stuffed to the brim with goodies. I hope I don't forget about them this year.

Austin also came. We drank 7&7s and sat on the couch talking about many things with Aurora and Hunter (including how expensive Apple stores really are with their imported materials). And we all watched the fireworks, though I think Reno's set from Rancho was better than Sparks this year. My personal opinion to be sure.

Anyway, I had a really good time. I'm not writing about it as eloquently as I'd like, but so it goes. I hope you had a good Independence day if you're from the states. If not, I hope your Fridays were equally spectacular. Now it's time for me to shower and eat and all that stuff.

EDIT: Thank bog for saved drafts. My computer decided it didn't need to be on right before I was going to post this. Sigh. Can of compressed air, anyone?
howeverbrief: (Ink)
I'm tabling some of my previously discussed issues because I haven't found a suitable way to express them. I figure the best way to go about fixing the problem is to see what happens and reassess the situation later. Hopefully this way, I won't feel so frantic/confused/whatever about it and be more clear about what I want to happen as well as be able to listen.

So anyway...

Last night Austin, two of his friends (Julie and Cougan), and I went to a show at Club Underground. We saw Intro5pect, Citizen Fish, and Leftover Crack. I hadn't been out to a show in a while, so it was fun to get out and mingle.

I forgot how fun it is to people-watch at punk rock shows. Punk rock is its own little slice of subculture with kids just discovering punk, ska kids, old-but-I'm-still-cool punks, t-shirt and jeans folks, shirtless guys looking for a fight, mohawks in all colors, facial piercings and more. It's interesting to see what kind of people are drawn to these shows for their own reasons.

I am, of course, not a punk. Read more... )

After the show, we came out to find a boot on Austin's car. He had parked next to his friend Cougan's house in a lot with one car, a couch without cushions, a camper shell, and trash bags. Cougan also said he had never seen someone booted there before. It was slightly ridiculous, but we all chipped in (I had all of $7 in my wallet to contribute) to pay the fine and finally got back home around 1:00 in the morning.

All in all, an interesting night bookended by a slight annoyance.

Now I'm mostly thirsty, so I'm going to go take care of that. Before I go, I'll give you a list of happenings:
-Austin's dad is doing OK. We saw him yesterday before the show at the rehab center, and he is looking a lot better.
-My parents are coming up for dinner tomorrow because:
-Siobhan's leaving for Chile for another month and a half before school starts
-Might be stopping by a few lawyers offices on Monday
-My finger is shredded because I've been practicing bass
-I've started knitting a hat, which looks way too small but I've never done one before
-One of the cats threw up this morning and it had weird fibers in it that I can't figure out?

And done.

Today, I:
-woke up at Austin's place
-went to sushi with Siobhan and Austin
-puttered around Best Buy and Michael's Craft store, where we procured yarn then got distracted by their display of classic toys like the Ice Cream Punch Cone!
-watched The Producers (KEEP IT GAY!) and laughed
-knitted another case (this time for Austin's Ipod) from start to finish while Austin looked at knives on the internet

And I'm now watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network and wondering why I feel like a whale. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. I lead an exciting life.
howeverbrief: (Black)
I had a big day yesterday. Austin and I went to a radio remote his brother was doing at a music store I'd never heard of near the mall. They were having a drawing for a drum set and a bass or guitar, and Austin couldn't enter because Nate works for the station. I didn't win (and I also found out later that I couldn't have won anyway, boo!), but we went in the store anyway and ended up buying a beginning bass book (complete with cheesy illustrations of 80s children) and clarinet reeds. I got the book because I've been interested in learning bass for years but never really got around to it. The reeds are, well, for the clarinet? In case I never mentioned this, I used to be pretty good at clarinet back in high school and probably should pick it back up. I mean, yeah, the clarinet is pretty dorky and won't get you any dates, but I'd be mad at myself if I lost the ability to play. It was a big part of my life for years, really.

After that, we picked up Austin's clarinet (he also played back in the day) and a bass guitar he's letting me borrow. (I figured I would see if I'm still interested in learning once I get over the initial "I have all the stuff!" phase before I get a bass for myself. I'd hate to buy one and then discover that I hate the damn thing and want to break it in two every time I look at it.) We then cruised over to my place and tried to play clarinet. Austin got a little discouraged. He said it was because he "had lost it," but I think he just needs to get his pads replaced. I had some trouble hitting a few of the notes on his instrument that seemed fine on mine. I don't know.

Austin tried to get me to play bass, but I was too intimidated. I've heard him play bass before because he's been playing that for years, and I felt kind of silly. I know that's ridiculous because we all have to start somewhere, but hmm... I sat looking at the book while Austin chimed in with pointers and comments about the book and stuff I'd be learning later instead. He said of the whole thing, "This will probably just make you want to play clarinet more and me want to play bass more." Augh.

So, I'm nearly always having sushi cravings (probably because I'm yuppie-ish, but you'll never hear me admit it!). I don't like going at dinnertime because All-You-Can-Eat is so expensive. However, I really wanted some yesterday, so we invited Siobhan and Michael to come with us. During the process of getting ready to go, Mike also suggested we go bowling. He and Austin had a bet going about who would pay for beer by the time I got back, so it was settled.

We went and stuffed ourselves with fish at Sushi Boat (so full, but it was worth it) and headed over to the Grand Sierra for bowling. I admit, I hate bowling. It hurts my hands, and I've never gotten the hang of throwing the ball right. I was whiny and not very sportsmanlike about it, but it was pretty fun to hang out with my siblings and Austin somewhere outside the house.

Then, after a rousing round of Rock Band, it was time for bed. That's where I'd still be if Olive in her infinite wisdom hadn't woken me up with her incessant meowing and attempted cat burgling. (Sigh. I guess I had to wake up sometime anyway.) Lots of things going on, though. Hopefully there's more to come.

Anyway, that's enough of my babbling. Hope you and yours all have a happy father's day!

My fingers kind of hurt, but I finished a knitting project (minus the sewing I haven't done yet) in less than a day. And it isn't a scarf or anything I've ever made before!

I did other things today, too. I e-mailed old professors and ate Jimboy's with Austin for lunch, but neither of those yielded a finished product!

I'm not sure about it yet, as the ties look kind of funny, but hey, a kerchief in half a day's not too shabby. Well, for me anyway considering I've been working on the same blanket since winter started.

Why, yes. I should be in bed. Thanks for noticing.

I'm taking notes from my paper journal. Some will be truncated; others will be expanded. Paper springboarding, if you will.

Grandma and Grandpa's fiftieth anniversary party was cute yesterday. They both wore purple, with Grandma in sparkles and Grandpa in an eggplant-colored suit! It was certainly a sight to see.

There's more, of course. Always. My memory is already fading, though, and it's time to get going. Onward and upward until this is naught but a flicker in the mind. Sigh.
